Our Isopods

We culture our isopods in a warm, moist mixture of sphagnum peat moss and oak leaves/bark. They're raised on a diet of fresh vegetables, high protein fish flakes, and the rich organic substrate in which they are bred. Our isopods are harvested and packaged the same day they are shipped so as to guarantee a healthy live arrival.

Porcellio, laevis (Dairy Cow) Isopods

Porcellio, laevis (Dairy Cow) isopods are a great addition to your terrarium/vivarium ecosystem as they serve multiple functions. First, they clean their environment by consuming leaf litter, animal feces, and dead plant matter. Second, their waste is a valuable source of nutrients for your plants. And third, they're primarily surface dwellers, extremely active and tons of fun to watch.

Dairy Cows are both hardy and prolific once established. They're also one of the larger isopod available today ranging in size from 1/2" to 3/4". They're fantastic substrate aerators and make live animal husbandry easier. They play an important function as soil nutrient cyclers while providing a secondary source of high calcium food for certain (larger) pets. Dairy Cows are omnivores and have a voracious appetite for decaying vegetation and the high protein found in animal fesses. They're safe to add to any reptile, amphibian, arachnid, or snake habitat as they will not harm or affect the behavior of the animal in any way. Given their size, most dart frogs are unable to consume them which make them a great choice for dart frog vivarium's. Generally speaking, Dairy Cows are simply good pets.

As a general rule of thumb, one (1) Dairy Cow per gallon habitat works best to establish a productive cleanup crew.
