Porcellio, scaber (Orange) Isopods are a great addition to your terrarium/vivarium ecosystem as they serve multiple functions. First, they clean their environment by consuming leaf litter, animal feces, and dead plant material and their waste is a valuable source of nutrients for your plants. Second, they're great high calcium snacks for amphibians, lizards and other terrarium pets. Third, they're extremely active and fun to watch.

Orange isopods are one of the larger isopod species available today. They're very prolific once established and fantastic substrate aerators. Isopods make herp habitat husbandry easier. They play an important function as soil nutrient cyclers while providing a secondary source of high calcium food for your pets. Isopods are omnivores. They feed on frass (poop), leftover bits of feeder or pray insects, dead and decaying plant matter, and pretty much anything else in or on the substrate.

Springtails are great for bioactive enclosures:

  1. Bioactive Ecosystem Champions: Springtails are essential inhabitants of bioactive setups. They play a vital role in breaking down decaying organic matter, helping to keep your enclosure clean and odor-free.
  2. Natural Cleanup Crew: These minuscule organisms work tirelessly to consume detritus, mold, fungi, and even animal waste, effectively recycling nutrients and maintaining a clean and healthy environment.

  3. Trouble-Free Maintenance: Springtails are incredibly low-maintenance. Once introduced to your enclosure, they require minimal care, making them a perfect choice for both beginners and experienced vivarium keepers.

  4. Stress-Free Coexistence: Springtails are harmless and coexist peacefully with a wide range of terrarium or vivarium inhabitants, including reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. They neither harm nor disturb other species.

  5. Regulate Humidity: Springtails aid in regulating humidity levels by aerating the substrate and preventing excessive moisture buildup. This is crucial for the health and comfort of your enclosure's residents.

  6. Constant Reproduction: Springtails are prolific reproducers, ensuring a stable and self-sustaining population within your setup. You won't need to worry about restocking frequently.

  7. Educational Value: Observing Springtails' natural behaviors and their interactions with your enclosure's ecosystem provides an excellent educational opportunity for enthusiasts of all ages.

  8. Customizable Bioactive Environments: Whether you have a tropical vivarium, arid terrarium, or anything in between, Springtails are adaptable and can thrive in various environments, helping you create a customized bioactive oasis.
